Day 1

Finance & Investment in Ocean Energy

Keynote Session – The Role of Ocean Energy in the International & EU Renewables Portfolio
This keynote session will explore the big picture and potential of ocean energy, its role in the entire energy supply chain, and the outlook for the future development.

  • What role is ocean energy playing in the entire renewable energy supply chain?
  • What are the critical stepping stones the ocean energy industry has achieved?
  • What are the future opportunities and challenges for ocean energy?
  • Overview of National Action Plans

Thw Opportunity for an Ocean Energy Strategy
This session will focus on the European Commission’s plan for ocean energy development, the new ocean energy road map, policies and incentives. How can collaborations between EU Member States and the EC help the industry move onto a fast development track?

  • New climate change policies: how will you be affected?
  • What role governments play in ocean energy development?
  •  How can new policies and support help accelerate the industry development?
  • Lessons learnt from other sectors

Realities of Finance & Investment in Ocean Energy
Ocean energy technologies and projects are new areas for investors. As technologies are getting more mature, investors will take many stakes in the sector from technologies to business portfolio to actual projects. This session will discuss some of the key issues in investing in the ocean energy sector as well as the role of utilities in ocean energy development.

  • What are the key success criteria in financing & investing in ocean energy projects?
  • What are the key factors in successfully accessing public funding?
  • What position are private investors taking on ocean energy projects?
  • How can utilities benefit from investing in ocean energy and what roles are utilities playing in ocean energy development?

Dragons' Den Style Face to Face Meeting – Understand What Investors Look For
This session aims to provide a platform for investors, inventors and entrepreneurs to meet. Each presenter will have 5 minutes to present their technologies, business plans, and financial forecasts. These presentations will receive comments, expert advice and investment propositions from the dragons.

  • What risks & expensive mistakes investors are trying to avoid?
  • What stages (R&D, prototype, water test, pilot projects) are different investors looking for?
  • More promising investment period vs. more promising technologies?
  • Technology partnership, direct equity investment or licensing technologies?
  • Who are the future stakeholders in ocean energy, utilities, strategic investors, independent power producers (IPPs), infrastructure fund or governments?

Day 2

Ocean Energy Technologies

Ocean Energy from R&D to Commercialisation
Ocean energy development needs a lot of support from leading R&D centres, research institutes and test centres. New inventions and technologies need to be tested, validated and these are critical steps on the way to commercialisation. This session will address critical aspects of ocean energy moving from R&D to commercialisation.

  • What are the statuses of different technologies in the short and long term?
  • How are R&D and test centres involved in strategic ocean energy development?
  • Latest updates on engineering, construction and maintenance to ensure successful implementation
  • How to balance cost reduction, efficiency boost, survivability and easy maintenance?
  • How can standards help the industry moving forward and what standards are there?

Utility Involvement in Ocean Energy
Utilities are getting ever more active in the renewable energy sector. Ocean energy as one of the newer renewable energy sources is giving a lot of hope even though at an early stage. This session will discuss what roles utilities are playing in ocean energy development.

  • What are the utilities’ concerns about ocean energy?
  • What current involvements do utilities have in ocean energy development?
  • What problems are there with ocean energy development from a utilities’ perspective?
