Globally, the carbon emissions trading market is booming, with the World Bank estimating its size at approximately $30 billion last year. Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean have already captured a share of that market and many estimate that that share could be much bigger in the future. The potential for carbon emission reduction projects is growing as the region's development causes emissions numbers to trend upward. This has led the Mexican government to consider reducing GHG emissions through a domestic cap and trade system. There are already several dozen projects spread across the region that have been created by a range of entities but the opportunity for project hosts to develop new projects is huge.
The inaugural Carbon Markets Mexico & Central America conference and exhibition will bring together key players from the region - with particular focus on Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and the Caribbean – with global industry experts. This event is a new addition to the Carbon Markets Series which is now in its 5th year and has been attended by over 2000 sustainability professionals and will continue to provide an excellent platform for new project hosts to learn about the latest market developments and do business with CER buyers.

This in depth one day seminar will provide potential industry project hosts with the expertise and knowledge to successfully enter the carbon market. Combining expert presentations with practical case studies this seminar will serve as an excellent introduction to the main conference.
Opening Plenary Session -
Carbon Mitigation in Mexico & Central America
This session will give an update on the carbon mitigation market in the region and will link this back to the current status of the carbon markets worldwide. It will also consider how developments in the EU ETS and the new administration in the US will affect Mexico & Central America. The session will then focus on the role of policy in accelerating the regions position in the carbon markets moving forward.
Focus on Mexico - New Market Developments & Overcoming Barriers to Expansion
This session will look at the potential role of a domestic cap and trade scheme in Mexico, integrating renewable energy with Mexico’s electricity sector and how to drive the market forward in Mexico. It will also include case studies of current project developments in the public and private sectors.
Finance & Investment Opportunities
This session will give attendees an up to date understanding of the various financing options available to companies developing or looking to develop CDM projects. It will also review the ways to increase investment in the region, what investors are looking for and where the finance is currently coming from.
Balancing Project Priorities including
Verification & Monitoring
In this session the other key considerations that need to be taken into account at the start of a projects development cycle are reviewed. It is essential that project hosts plan the full project cycle at the start of the process to avoid costly mistakes.
Carbon Trading
In this session international carbon buyers and traders will share their expertise on the market. The session will give an update on trading and pricing options, it will review what kinds of projects buyers are looking for and the factors determining price. The final part of the session will take an in depth look at future US demand for Mexican & Central American credits.
CDM Project Host Case Studies
This session will present case studies from industry project hosts showing the diverse applications of the CDM mechanism, examining them to find the key success factors. There will be a selection of small and large scale projects at different stages in the certification process, from planning to the issuance of CERs. How do you ensure projects progress along the CDM pipeline?
Voluntary Carbon Markets & Forestry
This session will review the voluntary market and its application in Mexico & Central America. It will cover voluntary standards & pricing of VERs and look at how the voluntary market fits alongside the compliance market in the region. The specific opportunities for forestry credits will also be reviewed.
Closing Plenary Session - Future Directions
This session will look at the uncertainty surrounding post 2012 and consider how the regions markets will evolve.
Forests play a vital role in the globe’s carbon dioxide balance through their massive carbon uptake. Reduced Carbon Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) is a financial market mechanism to finance forest preservation that is being considered for inclusion in the next global climate treaty. This mechanism would see payments from the developed world made to tropical developing countries and their forest communities to protect their forests. These avoided deforestation carbon credits could be a vital revenue stream. This in depth one day seminar will assess all the key issues for Mexico & Central America.
If you are involved in the extended biofuels value chain in Mexico or Central America and would like to submit a speaking proposal (presentation title, 4-5 bullet points and brief company and biography synopsis) please contact Nigel Yeates.
