Building on the success of the inaugural Carbon Capture & Storage Congress in Abu Dhabi in 2008, this second annual event will bring together key players from the Middle East region and beyond with global industry experts.
Around the globe billions of dollars have been committed to the rollout of CCS as a tool to combat climate change, most recently $ 1.52bn through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and €1,050m as part of the European Energy Programme for Recovery Regulations. This is in addition to the ongoing funding of CCS projects and research by the oil, gas and electricity generation industries and others in the private sector. Yet there are still only a handful of facilities worldwide working on a commercial scale.
As the array of funding options, technological solutions, regulatory initiatives and pilot projects expands and multiplies, the Carbon Capture & Storage Congress brings together the experts and issues critical to overcoming the technical, commercial, legislative and scientific hurdles to a timely and wide reaching deployment of CCS. It provides a crucial forum to hammer out the question of whether a combination of public policy and private investment can provide sufficient funding and impetus in time to allow CCS to fulfill its potential in combating climate change.
The Unique Challenges and Opportunities for CCS in the Middle East
This session will highlight the importance of the Middle East in the global implementation of CCS. Who are the most important stakeholders driving CCS forward, how are CCS projects financed, frameworks for commercialisation and plans and timescales for the regional C02 grid.
The Economics of CCS: Incentives, Competition and Investments
An analysis of funding options, risk management and partnerships for CCS projects. Including questions of commercialisation, the linkage between CCS and the carbon markets and the policy and economic gaps between capture ready, demonstration and climate cleanup.
Legal and Regulatory Frameworks
This session will examine the progress towards a coherent global convergence on regulatory frameworks. Key themes will be acceptance criteria for the whole C02 value chain, the policy and regulatory support needed for private sector investment in CCS and national and trans-national liabilities.
The Latest Prospects and Developments in Industrial Scale CCS
A review of the progress in turning theoretical studies into industrial realities. This session will include case studies from around the world, key PR lessons, technology evaluations and a roadmap for near term full scale demonstration and medium term commercialisation.
The Latest Advances in Carbon Capture Technology
A wide ranging evaluation of progress in CCS technology including oxycombustion, chilled ammonia systems, pre-combustion capture, the latest amine based technologies, new membrane based capture systems and energy consumption minimisation.
The Challenges of CO2 Storage
This session will address the diverse aspects of secure long term storage of CO2: the relative merits of oilfields and EOR, depleted gas fields, saline aquifers, geological storage criteria and site mapping for sequestration, GIS mapping, data requirements for site assessment, monitoring, measurement, verification and risk management.
CO2
Transport Development and Infrastructure
A session devoted to the increasingly critical issues of CO2 transport. Including facility design, integrating old and new infrastructures, pipeline transport, ship transport and the development of an integrated transport infrastructure.
The Future Prospects and Importance of CCS
This session will provide an informed view of the questions hanging over the short and medium term prospects for CCS. To what extent is CCS an interim measure and does it divert attention and resources from real solutions to climate change? How to engage emerging economies that are heavily reliant on fossil fuels? What will the CO2 value chain look like in 5 and 10 years time? What is the potential of novel biocapture strategies? What are the risks of failure?
