Introduction:

The opening address will be given by His Excellency Salvador Namburete, Minister for Energy, Republic of Mozambique. To download the official invite from the Ministry please click here.

The conference will be simultaneously translated in English and Portuguese

Following the success of the inaugural Biofuels Markets East Africa conference and exhibition and the inaugural African Jatropha Roundtable that took place in Dar es Salaam in September 2008, this congress will expand on these events as well as incorporating our southern Africa based Biofuels Markets Africa conference (4th annual).  These developments will make this THE event for all your bioenergy knowledge and networking needs in eastern and southern Africa.

These events will bring together key players from the region – with particular focus on Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Zambia, Malawi & Madagascar – with global industry experts.  This event forms part of the Bioenergy Markets Global Series which is now in its 5th year and has been attended by over 7000 high calibre delegates to date.

African observers see new potential for the continent in the form of a bioenergy boom as large areas of the continent are proving fertile ground for those seeking an alternative to fossil fuels.  Africa has the potential to become a major exporter of biofuels and this has opened up a lot of investment interest with Mozambique receiving a lot of the recent attention.  In turn this offers many opportunities for local economic development.

Sustainable bioenergy remains a key part of the global energy solution and East & Southern Africa represents a nascent marketplace.  Attendees will learn more about this growing market – meeting the key players and regional representatives, at a time when the region is identifying expanding opportunities for the production of feedstocks and biofuels for use both in Africa and for export.  The growing demand for biofuels has sparked a green revolution in Africa and a frenzy of biofuel crop planting and investment.

Despite these opportunities there are still several challenges that remain before the region can fully benefit:

  • Food vs. fuel – bioenergy needs to be produced in a sustainable manner
  • Water availability – management of this resource is key
  • Land tenure – developing best practice to balance the needs of investors with small farmers
  • Scale of production – incorporating cooperative models
  • Lack of infrastructure – investments are required to expand production
  • Knowledge base – new information systems with timely data on potential, water availability and agronomic techniques
  • Life cycle analysis – applications must ensure GHG reductions
  • Policy - the need for a clear guidelines and incentives

Agenda outline:

Pre-Conference Workshop

Trade Not Aid: Links with Brazil & India
Despite decades of aid from developed countries to the South, Africa is still hindered by the lack of investment and infrastructure needed to take advantage of opportunities otherwise available to those in the North. A global debate is underway about the value of development aid, whether it should and could be reformed or what would take its place if programmes were to end. The energy sector, and renewables in particular, is no different.

The participation of small and medium sized businesses, paired with investment and technology transfer, offer the opportunity for real market development and wealth creation that aid has not been able to deliver. In that context, PANGEA, Partners for Euro-African Green Energy, welcome participants of Bioenergy Markets Africa to a special pre-conference workshop exploring "Trade, Not Aid: Links with Brazil & India".

Though the North may be hampered by distorted post-colonial trade relationships which are focused on aid, that situation does not involve Brazil and India who are experts in bioenergy and are becoming more active in Africa. They are in Africa looking to make a profit, but not at the expense of the community, as has been seen with some Chinese investment. Join Brazilian and Indian speakers including: EMBRAPA, the Brazil-Africa Chamber of Commerce, Indian companies, and more to discover experiences of 'South-South' bioenergy investment and opportunities for the future.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Arq. Carlos Manuel Pedroso Neves Cristo, Chief of Staff, Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, Secretariat for Innovation
  • Marcos Brandelisi, Managing Director, BrazAfric Ltd.
  • Nei Futuro Bitencourt, Counsellor, Embassy of Brazil to Mozambique
